When it comes to wearing red lipstick, Celebrity Makeup
Artist Shavon Lyon does it best! Lyon isn’t just throwing that celebrity title
around. Oh no. Does Dr. Mayo Angelou ring a bell? How
about the beautiful Malinda Williams? Just to name a few, although many has been given
that signature beauty glow that identifies the North Carolina native. You can only imagine our delight when
Lyon took time out of her busy schedule – she also is the beauty editor for
Carolina STYLE Magazine – to take away our fears regarding red lipstick. Whether it’s a red-orange or blue-red,
Shavon Lyon is showing us how to achieve the Perfect Red Pout.
BGW: How long have you been doing makeup?
SL: Since about 2003! I started out as a Cosmetologist, and
one day a friend and I decided to go to the MAC counter and applied for
jobs. I ended up getting hired!
BGW: Why are people so afraid of wearing red lipstick?
SL: There are so many hues of red. You have the red-orange that are very bright for summer, and
the blue-red. I like the
blue-reds, as they give nice warm undertone. It’s [blue-red] classy for everyday and timeless.
BGW: Does your skin tone play a factor in your red choice?
SL: Not really! A person with a darker skin tone can add a
brown liner to red-orange, just to warm it up a bit.
BGW: Naturally I would think that a darker skin tone would
choose the blue-red!
SL: You don’t have to, just add the liner…And blend. Please blend the liner.
BGW: What suggestions do you have for a newbie?
SL: Go to a place where you can test multiple reds like
Sephora or Ulta. Try it on your
lips and not the back of your hand.
Most places have sanitizers that you can use to clean the lipstick. The back of your hand is not the same
color of your lips.
BGW: How do you make it long-lasting?
SL: Use a primer first or a clear powder to prevent
feathering!
BGW: Feathering?
SL: Feathering is when the lipstick begins to bleed out from
the lips or creates a red mustache.
BGW: Who makes your favorite red(s)?
SL: Quite a few.
Of course, Makeup Forever! I like MAC’s Russian Red. I love matte. Matte
is timeless. It’s like that 40’s,
sexy, bombshell look that I love, and I wear it often.
Step #1: Lyon used these products to achieve her perfect red put!
Step #3: After moisturizing her lips, she then used a lipliner
Step #4: Followed by applying the red lipstick
Step #5: Finishing up with a lip brush
Step #6: All done!
