Cate Edwards posed for Harper's Bazaar Magazine |
The John Edwards Trial has brought massive media attention to
Greensboro, North Carolina. Photographers
and reporters camped out daily to get the perfect shot of the former presidential
hopeful, as he walked into Federal Court with his family, amongst his entourage. Our
eyes were delighted by Edward’s arm candy, eldest daughter Cate Edwards. Cate usually keeps a demure persona –
especially in the limelight.
However, recently – the Harvard
Law graduate, wife and big sister of three, has made fashion choices during the
trial that spoke volumes.
One would describe Cate’s style as conservative-chic or better yet, courtroom chic (CC). These types
of dressers are considered to be reserved, as they typically stay in the safety
zone of fashion, and usually love basic hues such as black, white, taupe, gray,
etc. They aren’t trendsetters, but
they remain polished. Every once
in a while, our “CC” girls will pull a fast one on us, and that is exactly what
Cate did. Here’s a look at our courtroom
style lessons from Cate!
Pop of Color
Part of the spring/summer 2012 trends showed that a “Pop” of
color would take an outfit from boredom to stardom. A true attention-getter it is, and Mrs. Cate delighted each
morning on what we could now call the sidewalk, her fashion catwalk. She showed us how to pair a basic black
skirt and cardigan with a hot pink blouse. In fact, on several occasions we saw the hot pink color
choice coupled with a floral lime and pink tunic and a striped, multi-colored
buttoned-down blouse.
Color-Blocking and Cardigans
Another trend we saw was the color-blocking. Color-blocking is paring two bold or
neutral colors together to create one look. Cate achieved this with a teal belted dress, paired with a
mint colored cardigan. Speaking of
cardigans, our style maven has a true love affair with them, as she was spotted
wearing a red, green and white, and black. Cardigans are an item that transitions well into every season,
- Fall/Winter/Spring/Summer – and are welcomed with most outfits.
The Boyfriend Blazer
The boyfriend blazer is best described exactly how it
sounds. The over sized jacket that
emulates a man’s sports coat worked well with Cate’s above-the-knee
skirts. The popular trend comes in
an assortment of colors, and can be worn with denim as well.
Accessories Matter
With the many style looks of Cate, one thing remained
constant: Her handbag choice. The
Carolina Blue colored Longchamp “Le
Pilage” Bag graced every single look, showing us that the days of the
matching bag are long gone. And her jewelry? Well, it didn’t go
unnoticed. Our favorite CC girl
stayed true to classic staples, such as pearls, double stranded beads, and on
some days, electing to remain bare necked. The bare neck has been seen on several of the New York
runway fashion shows, and aren’t odd as it relates to style.
Shoes
As Cate took to the Market Street runway, she chose comfort
by wearing ballet flats, and wedge sandals. Black flats with a cream colored wrap blouse and black suit
made its presence in a subtle way.
The shoes that you choose should always compliment your outfit, make a
statement, and be a conversation piece. But this should be in a good way when
the outfit is simple with the potential of being glam by pairing it with an
extravagant shoe.
Now that the trial has come to an end with a not-guilty
verdict on one count and a mistrial on the remaining four charges, we’ll miss
our daily courtroom style lessons that Cate has given us. I’m sure as she approached her day, she
never thought about the many fashion eyes that would be watching and judging
her daily style choices, or better yet, maybe she did?
